Andrew Hunter Scott was born in Middleton, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, August 21st 1815. His father was Joshua Scott, also born in Pennsylvania and his grandfather came from Scotland, and settled in New Jersey about the year 1736. Andrew H. Scott's mother, was Ann Keen Scott. She was the daughter of Joseph Keen, who emigrated from England just before the Revolutionary War. Andrew grew up on his father's farm in Pennsylvania. He had four brothers and three sisters.
He was married on February 18th, 1838 to Sarah L. Sleeper, a native of New Jersey. Five children were born of this marriage--George C.; Mary Emma, Hyrum S.; and Eliza and Margaret, twins.
Mr. Andrew H. Scott first heard the gospel of Mormonism in 1840 and in three years later was baptized into the church. He was ordained an Elder. In 1850 he made preparations to go to Utah, but was opposed by his wife, who was a devout member of the Methodist Church. She took her daughters and went to her friends. When he was unable to find any trace of them, he took his two sons and left for Utah.
